Talking, Texting, E-mailing, Filming, Photo Sharing and More!

News today of the new lightweight 10” Apple tablet hitting the market has brought back the discussion of tablets which now appear to be morphing into phones. There is no debate about the convergence taking place between these independent devices: Smartphones are getting thinner and larger while tablets are getting smaller and lighter. In both cases, these devices now perform similar functions and emit the same 4G non-ionizing emissions which can be harmful when exposed too close to the body for extended periods of time.
We can do it all now with these devices – tablet or smartphone: talk, text, e-mail, film, photo share, shop, pay bills etc. The challenge comes with misuse such as holding our phones or tablets up against the head or body. Schools which now distribute tablets to students require the constant Wi-Fi connectivity and use of the tablet for most of the daily academic projects. This constitutes too much use of these non-ionizing emitting devices. The “always on” cellular companionship implied by constant connectivity will over expose our bodies to non-ionizing radiation. Accordingly, we need to set realistic parameters on smartphone and tablet usage particularly with respect to children.
As parents, we can talk to our kids and set standards which are healthy and supportive with respect to cellular technology use in the home and recreationally. Additionally, we can speak with our schools to ensure that the amount of time our children spend working with tablets and Wi-Fi devices does not exceed reasonable limits during the school day.
Tablets are now faster, lighter and more powerful than ever. It’s our job to ensure that our children use these tools safely.
