Cell-phones’ link to health problems debated
by Stephanie M. Lee
Wednesday, December 25, 2013
Every weekday morning, Bret Bocook sits in a cozy Starbucks in downtown Los Altos. He sips coffee and reads the paper. But mostly, he watches people as they chat on their cell phones.
Then he walks over to deliver a message.
“I was observing you on your cell phone,” Bocook told a woman after she wrapped up a lengthy call on a recent morning. “I used a cell phone and I got a brain tumor.”
Startled, the woman politely listened. Bocook tends to command attention, and not just because he has the tall, broad build of a former competitive rower. The 49-year-old Los Altos man limps with a cane, the result of a surgery that removed a malignant brain tumor about four years ago but left him with shaky motor skills…

Cellular telephone manufacturers are required to warn users of the dangers of phone radiation. Every cell phone user manual contains warnings for users to keep the phone at a safer distance from the head, but most users are unaware of these safety standards. “Specific Absorption Rate” (SAR) is a measure of the rate at which energy is absorbed by the body when exposed to a Radio Frequency (RF) electromagnetic field. SAR is the standard which the FCC and the CTIA (Cellular Telephone Industry Association) use to measure the level of non-ionizing radiation absorbed in the body by different cellular telephones. SAR is somewhat controversial but is the industry accepted standard. Green Swan, Inc. is committed to promoting safer use of mobile phones with its line of safety products.

Cell-Phone Safety: What the FCC Didn’t Test
Oct 26, 2010
We are a nation grown numb to the seemingly endless fine print that accompanies our purchases. But every now and then a product is sold with a warning that should command attention. Consider the little-noticed bit of legalese that comes in the safety manual for Apple’s iPhone 4: “When using iPhone near your body for voice calls or for wireless data transmission over a cellular network, keep iPhone at least 15 mm (5/8 inch) away from the body, and only use carrying cas-es, belt clips, or holders that do not have metal parts and that maintain at least 15 mm (5/8 inch) separation between iPhone and the body,” the warning reads.

Mobile phone use: the city of Lyon teaches a lesson
Dec 13, 2008
For the first time in France, a major city is launching a campaign to discourage the use of mobile phones among children. The really new, in fact unusual, factor is that this action is not being promoted by the city itself but by a political group, the Green Party, of which Mireille Roy, the council officer in charge, is a member.
